Ask Belle: Summer Skirts

May 29, 2013

Hi Belle,

I read your post last week about shorts, and I’m wondering what advice you have on summer skirts.  Skirts for work would be great, but I’m really looking for skirts for the weekend.

Thank you.  Love your blog.  Kristin

Cotton Pencil Skirt ($110) // Ariel Pleat Skirt ($95) // Mango Knife-Pleated Skirt ($60) // French Connection Cotton Skirt ($60) // Eyelet Mini-Skirt ($64)

Some readers have expressed frustration with the J.Crew pencil skirts, but I haven’t had the same problem with wrinkling.  So purchase with caution.  If you’d like a cotton pencil from someone other than J.Crew, Ann Taylor has a plain one and an eyelet lace one.  Banana Republic also has a cotton pencil this season, and White House, Black Market has a stylish cotton blend skirt.  Plus-size?  Sejour has a cotton pencil on sale at Nordstrom.

The second skirt is currently on sale at Net-a-Porter, and since I love a bright skirt with neutral separates, I may just have to buy it.  I’d wear it with a striped t-shirt or a peasant blouse.

Pleated skirts come in knee-length, mini and maxi.  A knee-length one like this can be worn for a work or play, but the other two are almost strictly play.  I like the Mango one above, but this cobalt ASOS one and this papaya-colored Anne Klein skirt are lovely.

Breezy cotton skirts are great for the weekend.  I would wear this FC skirt with a simple white tee or with a racerback tank.  I also like this breezy white skirt.  For plus size ladies, I found this a-line skirt and for petites, this lace-detail Topshop skirt.

Mini-skirts are a weekend summer staple.  I like this palm-printed DvF skirt, it’s fabulous.  This metallic stripe miniskirt is adorable.  And this polka-dot skirt has some really chic pleating on the front.

What do you wear with pleated skirts, to work specifically? I just got one crazy on sale from Loft but have no clue what to wear on top.

  2. Belle says:

I always start with a button up shirt and a wide belt. From there, try t-shirts for casual wear and it on with your jackets, I like them with collarless Chanel-esque tweed jackets.

  3. Julie says:

This is such a cute selection of skirts! I particularly like the pink pleated one and the nave scalloped hem skirt.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
