Award Shows: Emmy Awards 2013

Sep 23, 2013

I missed the Emmy’s yesterday, but what would this blog be without award show fashion roundups?

As usual, all images are from Just Jared, check out that site for full Emmy coverage.  Here are my best and worst from the 2013 Emmy Awards.

The Worst Dressed List

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Michelle Dockery in Prada

Who knew Lady Mary was a Virginia Tech fan?

connie-britton-emmys-2013-red-carpet-01

Connie Britton in Naeem Khan

Tammy Taylor fished this one out of The White Queen costume department’s reject pile.

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Lena Dunham in Prada

A hideous print in a shape that doesn’t nothing for her body with eye makeup more suited to Halloween, Lena Dunham hits all the wrong notes, again.

sofia-vergara-julie-bowen-emmys-2013-red-carpet-05

Julie Benz in Zac Posen

Just say no to shoulder bows.

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Sarah Hyland in CH by Carolina Hererra

Not sure what happened to Sarah Hyland.  She looks like she consulted John Boehner on the best places to get a spray tan for her Corpse Bride-themed prom.

And the worst red carpet look of the night was worn by…

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Julianne Hough in Jenny Packham

I love Jenny Packham (this look was a favorite from her recent NYFW show), but this dress was made for a woman of considerable height with legs like a crane.  In other words, the model who wore it on the runway, and almost no one else.

The dress makes Julianne Hough, a petite woman with slimmer than average thighs, look painfully pear-shaped paunchy.  Creating imperfections that are not there is not what you want from a gown.  Not to mention that the whole half-of-a-dress thing doesn’t work, and is made more awkward by the fact that her brother was her date.

However, I will say this for her: Post-Seacrest break-up, if she was looking to get noticed without pulling a full Miley, she definitely succeeded.

Catch the best dressed looks after the jump…

The Best Dressed List

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Tina Fey in Narciso Rodriguez

I always like when Tina wears color, and this is a great neckline/silhouette on her.

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

January Jones in Givenchy

I like the mix of textures and the shape of this mauve dress.  It’s about one shade from washing her out, but it’s just enough contrast that it works.

elisabeth-moss-christina-hendricks-emmys-2013-red-carpet-05

Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano

I don’t usually gravitate towards black dresses, but this sophisticated gown with delicate lace details fits her beautifully and looks incredible.

Rose Byrne in Calvin Klein

Ah, the clean look of Calvin Klein, now with cutouts.  I don’t know how her makes a bare midriff seem subtle, as opposed to tacky, but he does.

And the best look of the night goes to…

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Linda Cardellini in Donna Karan

The color.  The structured, wavy texture.  The low back.  The train.  Perfection.

I would also like to give a most-improved award to…

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Zooey Deschanel in J Mendel

It’s not a great dress, but I appreciate that this look takes a step away from the twee-hipster attire she usually wears.  Compared to her Loretta Lynn look or her psychedelic 70s-funk look, this is a move in the right direction.

  1. Anna says:

I loved Michelle Dockery’s dress! The color combo makes an otherwise simple dress fun and different. I didn’t even think about VT until you mentioned it.

  2. Julie says:

Connie Britton had to pick up the dress in order to walk in it when she presented an award. That looked weird and uncomfortable.

  3. Shanycole says:

My best dressed was Kerry Washington in Marchesa. The dress was breathtaking and new.

    • anon says:

yEAH, but she’s not white. You didn’t really expect to see her here, did you?

      • Belle says:

I love Kerry Washington. She’s had her own feature on this blog and been mentioned in previous award show roundups. I didn’t like her dress this time because it didn’t flatter her. I didn’t hate it, but it didn’t qualify as a favorite. So save your accusations of bias.

  4. Sarah says:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus!! And I also liked Elisabeth Moss, but could see some fashion critics disliking it.

    • Belle says:

I liked JLD’s dress, but the tailoring on it wasn’t very good. Or, at least, it didn’t look very good in photos, so I axed it from my first list.

  5. I agree with you in everything, except that I loved Michelle Dockery’s dress.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
