Ask Belle: Colored Handbags for Colder Months

Nov 25, 2013

Dear Belle,

I’m seeking a colored handbag that works for winter.  I’m leaning toward red but I wonder if you have other suggestions?  I need to spend under $125.

Aldo Adelaide Bag ($60) // Modcloth Girl with Curves Bag ($52) // Vegan Leather Doctor Bag ($59) // Olivia Joy Swanky Satchel ($88)

Red.  My red satchel gets a lot of use.  I wear it with almost everything in my wardrobe, but I especially love it with neutrals like black, all shades of brown, grey and navy.

This Aldo bag has a very structured shape with some bold hardware, but if you would like something simple, check out this Nine West Double Vision satchel.  Or, if you’re looking to bridge the gap, this DSW Rhapsody satchel is a favorite of mine.  Looking for a cross body?  Nordstrom’s B.P. brand has this zip-detail bag with a cross body strap and top handle.

Cobalt. Like red, cobalt is a color that can be worn in any season with almost any color outfit.  This Modcloth bag has some interesting details, as is this woven Urban Expressions satchel.  This Fossil Sydney satchel has a cleaner look with a removable strap.  And if you prefer a tote, this Kate Landry Laurice bag looks like something you would find at Ralph Lauren or Kate Spade.

Green. This greenish-teal bag from Urban Outfitters definitely caught my eye.  Probably because I’m a sucker for a doctor’s satchel.  But the color is elegant and versatile; it would pair well with black, grey or shades of blue.

Want a more vivid green?  This Olivia + Joy Classified satchel has an interesting shape and just the right amount of hardware.  I also like the unique shape and snakeskin embossed-print on this Danielle Nicole satchel.

Orange.  If you don’t think red is your color, try orange instead.  You can choose a vibrant shade like the tote bag in the photo, or you can go for a muted rust, like this Aldo Excuse satchel.  Prefer a satchel? Have a look at this Modcloth barrel-shaped satchel in persimmon.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
