10th Commandment: December 4

Dec 4, 2013

Since my previous post on dresses for holiday parties, I’ve received a few e-mails from readers who are looking for a sleeker alternative to lace, sequins or sheer.

Bailey 44 Cap Sleeve Side Ruched Dress ($202)

Bailey 44 is one of my favorite brands for cool t-shirts, however, they also make some of the nicest dresses in the mid-price point.  I adore this ruched dress with a cut-out in the shoulder, it reminds me of Helmut Lang.  I also like the modern way that they use sheer on their Decompression dress to create a dress that is sexy without being revealing.  And if you like mini-dresses with long sleeve, their popular Lorax dress comes in suede trim or leather trim.

Need something similar for less?  Try this doo.ri Asymmetrical Dress or this Zara tube dress with a sheer sleeve.  If you want something modern, that isn’t too tight, I also like this Tinley Road Stella dress and this dolman sleeve knitted sweater dress.

Also, if you’re in the market for holiday dresses at a discount, don’t miss the consignment shops.  Many women buy cocktail dresses and only wear them once before putting them up for sale.  I’ve found some great deals this way.  If you’re in D.C., try Redzz in Georgetown or Bethesda and the shops in Alexandria.

Plus-size: Calvin Klein Sleeveless Bandage Dress ($120)  Petite: ASOS Strappy Midi Dress ($27)

The Find: A Versatile Sweater Jacket

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
