Work Wednesday: Styling a Navy Cardigan

Cardigan: Merona Long Sleeve Crewneck ($20)

Upper Left, Hat: Metallic Baseball Cap ($45) Top: Stripe Top ($44) Shorts: J.Crew Shorts ($45) Shoes: Keds Canvas Shoe ($39) Earrings: Small Silver Hoop Earrings ($24)

Several of you have written in to ask for suggestions for work barbecues or golf events.  This outfit would be a good choice.  It’s relaxed but still put together.  If you’re not crazy about shorts, you could sub-in these Mango cotton chinos in pale pink.

This stripe top ended up being for pregnant ladies, so let’s see if we can find something else.  J.Crew has a sleeveless stripe top and Splendid offers a shortsleeve, navy-stripe tee.  I like Keds with shorts, but you could also wear a sandal like these Huarache ones from Skechers.

If you’re plus-size and looking for shorts, Land’s End offers several colors.  Petite?  J.Crew carries your size.

Upper Right, Ring: Jules Smith Dome Ring ($60) Bag: Topshop Clean Satchel ($56) Dress: H&M Sleeveless Dress ($35) Necklace: Carolee Mod Pendant ($60) Shoe: Kors Flex Pump ($110)

Berry and navy is a great color combination.  To keep this look simple, I added a snakeskin pump (you could also go with a flat) and a long pendant necklace.  I also like this Kenneth Cole necklace with navy and turquoise stones.

I would wear this outfit to work on casual Monday or a Friday when I had a casual business lunch.  I would also wear it to brunch with a pair of sandals or to church.  You could also add a belt if you need more waist definition.  I like this grey Coccinelle belt.  Wear it under or over the cardigan to suit your taste.

Bottom Right, Top: LNA Printed Tee ($38) Skirt: J.Crew 120s Pencil Skirt ($128) Shoes: Kors Flex Pump ($99) Bracelet: Wave Cuff Bracelet ($17) Bag: Urban Expressions Talene Satchel ($40)

I wanted to put together at least one really colorful outfit.  I thought Kelly green and navy sounded like fun.  This printed tee pairs well with the slim fitting skirt.  If you’d like a little less color, try an ivory blouse like this one from Vince Camuto or a navy one like this one from Jones New York.

I added a navy satchel (this one is a great buy!) and a cool bracelet.  I also chose flesh-toned pumps because they work best with very colorful attire.  This pair has a mid-height heel, they also make one with a kitten heel.  Or you can go for open-toe pumps.

Bottom Left, Dress: Anne Klein V-Neck Sheath ($79) Scarf: Vince Camuto Mixed Print ($38) Earrings: Kenneth Cole Studs ($22) Bag: Michael Kors Selma Satchel ($358)

If all else fails, white and navy is always a good combo.  If you want something fitted, this Tahari Kimber dress is perfect.  Plus-size? Try this sheath from Le Suit.  Petite? This Ann Taylor sateen sheath should work, also in tall.

I love the scarf with this to bring in more color.  I added the bag to complement the aqua hues in the scarf.  Prefer a different combination?  Try an orange Chan Luu scarf and matching bag.  Or go for a purple scarf and coordinating purse.

Lastly, there are no shoes in this post, but since there are so many colors, I would suggest flesh-toned pumps.

  1. Thank you for sharing that maternity top anyway! I’m six months pregnant and thrilled to find a cute tank top.

  2. Jordan says:

The Ann Taylor white sateen sheath – I’ve tried on several of these that AT carries at the moment. This particular one is a terrible fit for a pear shape – too big in the waist and too tight in the hips – I normally wear a 2-4, and even the 2 had this problem. If you’re hippier than you are bustier, don’t go for this one. (If you’ve got lots of junk in the trunk, however, it may be a better fit.)

  3. Mary says:

Love every one of these combos. Might need to pick up a navy cardigan soon…

  4. Anna says:

I wish there were mire fit and flare dresses that weren’t crew necks. My hips love the skirt part but my boobs suffocate on top. I end up looking way bustier than I am and kind of square too.

  5. Sarah says:

Cute outfits! I like the green and navy and ‘office bbq’ outfit the best, but that metallic hat? Ugh it looks like something my Grandma would wear!

  6. Ann says:

I just bought a navy/tan color blocked cardigan and was a little lost as to how to style it with other pieces. This helps so much!

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
