Ask Belle: YouTube Makeup Tutorials

Mar 2, 2015

Belle:

I have a major work-related evening event coming up, and would really love to incorporate some soft, professional makeup into my look.  I’m a complete dud when it comes to doing this, and was wondering if there are any good online tutorials for this?

Thanks. Catharine

This post should have been titled, I watch bad YouTube videos so you don’t have to.  Why?  Because there are a lot of rambling, unhelpful tutorials out there.  But after sorting through the rough, I did find a few diamonds.

This video from Lisa Eldridge is the perfect “No Makeup” makeup look for women who want to look flawless but not “done.” It takes some work, but once you perfect your technique, you’re looking at less than 10-minutes.  Eldridge is a British makeup artist who has worked with both Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet, so she really knows her stuff.

Lisa uses a Chanel eyeliner blush to apply concealer to small imperfections.  I like this Laura Mercier brush; it’s like a blemish-covering laser.

This tutorial from Head to Toe covers the basics of “every day” makeup.  The best part is that she uses drugstore products, so no matter your budget, you can get a great look.  She also has a great tutorial for covering your acne and applying foundation perfectly.  Even if you have problem skin (ooh, me, me!), you can look flawless with the right technique and products.

Need more glam in your life?  This tutorial from Makeup by Evon uses a brown eyeshadow to create a lightly shimmering smokey eye.  It’s a great evening look that is easy to recreate with the right eyeshadow palette.  She uses Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette, which has a wide selection of pink, brown, and neutral shades.

I LOVE Lisa Eldridge videos! I even watch them at night as I’m falling asleep because her voice is so soothing haha

Wow, Lisa Eldridge does a great video! There are some really really terrible makeup tutorials out there, guess she has good reason to put out a professional product if she’s a makeup artist for the stars!

Also, I secretly love her accent too, although I’m sure British people get tired of American’s ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ over their dulcet tones all the time. Ha!

Beauty Broadcast is one of my all-time favorites! She’s a former news anchor, so she’s very professional and so easy to listen to. Her blog took off so much she was able to leave the news and blog full-time. She recently had a baby, so there’s not as much content as there once was, but the archives on her youtube page are still fantastic.

I wear something like her Bronze Smokey tutorial many days of the week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvsOnHZNrV8&index=41&list=PL77838911B9D44412

Her Chocolate Covered Cherry video is my go-to look for a night out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JlyeAXqHWQ&index=35&list=PL77838911B9D44412

I adopted her eye makeup look 3 years ago and I still get compliments all the time.

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

Too Many Tabs: April 19, 2024

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]
