Belle’s Closet: Spring Purchase Reviews

Apr 29, 2015

Every few months, I like to review my recent purchases.  Talk about what I liked, what I loved, what I loathed.  This time, there are a mix of clothing and beauty purchases.  Some are new, some are re-reviews.  Let’s get started.

Belinda Eyelet Sheath Dress ($169)

From the moment I put this dress on, I fell in love.  It’s so pretty.  So pretty.  The cinched waist, flirty skirt, and eyelet fabric create a dress that is perfect for many summer occasions.

I ordered a 2 based on the size guide’s recommendation to size down.  I’m typically a 4/6, but this dress fits very well.  However, if you’re busty, you’ll want to take your regular size.

Britt Dress ($169)

I bought this dress unsure whether it was a work dress, a dinner dress, or possibly both.  I’m pleased to say that for many offices, this dress is both.  It’s not so snug as to be inappropriate for work, but fitted enough that you can dress it up for dinner.

The best thing about this dress is the color.  In the photo it is blush; in person, it’s a soft rose.  It gives you a hint of spring color without washing you out.

As for the fit, the sleeves are a bit snug and the bust too.  So you’ll want to take your regular size even though the size guide says to size down if those are your problem areas.

Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex Mascara’ ($28)

A few months ago, I gave this mascara a good recommendation.  I take it all back.

As the mascara ages, it becomes impossibly dry.  When I started wearing it, a bit would rub off on my lids.  By the end of the first month, it started to flake like breakfast cereal.  And changing contacts midday and fishing pieces of mascara out of the corners of my eyes is not a good time.

I’m going back to my Kevyn Aucoin mascara.

Seychelles ‘Can’t Trust Myself Sandal’ ($49)

I bought these sandals for a casual summer option.  I like that they have the cage front and an ankle strap to keep them from clopping about.  They also come in gold and melon.

They seem well made for a $49 sandal, but it’ll take a few more weeks of wear before I know for sure.  They’re comfortable, but did take a few wears to break in.  Blisters are always a concern when you wear a strappy sandal, but some anti-chafe stick will keep them at bay (mostly).

I totally agree about the Better Than Sex Mascara. It makes beautiful lashes, but so flaky 🙁

  2. L says:

Is the Belinda dress a true sheath? It looks A-line from the photo. (I’m trying to figure out what size to order.)

  3. marisa says:

I love that you update your recommendations–so helpful!

  4. Nicole says:

So glad for this Better than Sex review. Got a sample size and really like it. It does smudge a bit on me, but that’s a problem with nearly every mascara, so I could overlook it for times when I don’t need super long wear. But now knowing that it’s only going to get flaky and awful, I won’t even both with a full size. Thanks!

  5. Jenn S. says:

Yes on the Too Faced mascara! It is great for the first, oh, week to a month, but then it is hardcore flake city. Nooope.

  6. Anna says:

Wow, the Belinda dress actually looks better on you than the model. I thought it looked kind of dated and blah in the post, but seeing your instagram photo, it’s much better suited for a more petite (or at least not model height) frame.

Saw It On Social: Rooted

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
